Give. Advocate. Volunteer.

How is United Way involved in the ADVOCATE part of the LIVE UNITED call to action?

Over the years staff and volunteers have engaged in a variety of community-wide efforts, and information gathered from our 2-1-1 of WNC call center has been instrumental in helping educate decision makers about the needs faced by our neighbors.

Most prominently, United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, in conjunction with United Way’s Agency Executives Association, holds an annual meeting with the Buncombe County state legislative delegation to inform them of emerging issues in our community.

And yet United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County is just getting started in advocacy. When we unveiled LIVE UNITED in 2008, we knew GIVE and VOLUNTEER were historically our strengths. We've raised millions of dollars for our community and United Way's Hands On Asheville-Buncombe is fast becoming the area’s premier volunteer resource.

We are still defining what advocacy means to us as an organization. We plan to use this page on our site as a hub of information on some of the EDUCATION, INCOME and HEALTH issues in our community.

In the meantime we hope that you find your voice and advocate for the causes and issues close to your heart. To the right are just a few resources that can help.

What happened? United Way's annual meeting with the NC Budget and Tax Center, “A Legislative Briefing – An Overview of the North Carolina State Budget.” About 100 people, including Senator Martin Nesbitt, Jr., Representative Susan Fisher, and Representative Bruce Goforth, attended the “2009 Legislative Briefing” in the Haynes conference room at AB Tech’s Enka Campus.  Click here to see the powerpoint offered by Jill Cox, United Way of North Carolina and Elaine Mejia and Louisa Warren from the North Carolina Justice Center.  Watch for details about United Way’s annual meeting with Buncombe County’s State delegation coming in late April or early May, 2010.  Should you have questions, contact Ron Katz at 255-0696 or via email.
