The NC Medicaid Choice Coalition has been working hard to get Senate Bill 808 onto the Governor’s desk. This bipartisan bill is asking for Medicaid Transformation (which was passed in 2015 and is awaiting budget approval) to be reactivated after being on pause due to COVID19.

According to research, up to 80 percent of a person’s health is determined by social and environmental factors and the behaviors that emerge as a result. This is one reason why an integrated Medicaid system that includes non-medical services to address and improve whole health is so critical.
Under Secretary Cohen’s leadership, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has highlighted a substantial body of research that shows unmet social needs and challenges- including food insecurity, housing instability, lack of transportation and interpersonal violence or toxic stress – all which can lead to a significant negative impact on health and well-being. Lack of basic needs can also increase healthcare utilization and costs.
