At the heart of the captivating scenes at the 2023 United for Youth Block Party lies a resounding commitment: a commitment to shaping the future of our communities by championing education. United for Youth's Bold Community Goal is simple yet ambitious. By 2035, all Asheville City and Buncombe County students will graduate from high school ready and fully prepared to pursue their goals and dreams. And this audacious goal was celebrated in grand style at this year's Block Party.
The real-life heroes of this narrative are the Buncombe County students who graced the event with their exceptional talents and unwavering determination. From an electrifying rock band to mesmerizing dance troupes, from the energetic Asheville High cheer team to the enchanting performance by Reynold’s marching band – the stage was set ablaze by the brilliance of these young talents.
Yet, the Block Party wasn't just a showcase of talent; it was an embodiment of opportunity. More than 60 vendors converged, forming a bustling marketplace of knowledge, resources, and inspiration. Amidst this vibrant gathering, a youth job fair took root – a platform where students received not just job prospects but also guidance and tools to navigate their journey beyond high school.
However, the true essence of the event was etched in unity and action. Youth attendees, guided by UWABC and supported by the generous Pratt and Whitney, collectively crafted two bookshelves. This live workshop gave young students hands-on experience with STEAM projects that can be found in everyday life. These bookshelves will soon find their way into Buncombe County classrooms, serving as both a tangible representation of learning and a testament to collaborative effort.
The Block Party attracted a diverse spectrum of attendees, from the youngest to the most seasoned. Amidst the lively atmosphere, food trucks and dessert vendors ensured appetites were sated, allowing everyone to immerse themselves in the festivities fully. This event was more than just a gathering; it was a statement. A statement that education, community, and dreams intertwine to create a future of boundless potential.
