The 2024 School Supply Drive and Pack and Sort event has once again demonstrated the incredible power of community collaboration in Buncombe County. This year, we successfully organized, packed, and distributed fully stocked backpacks to over 2,300 local students, ensuring they have the tools they need to start the school year off right.
For three consecutive days, Harrah's Cherokee Center warehouse was transformed into a bustling hub of activity as United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County (UWABC) coordinated this massive undertaking. The success of this initiative hinged on the dedication of hundreds of volunteers and the generosity of donors who made it possible to purchase backpacks and essential school supplies
Stand-out Moments from this Year:
The incredible turnout from Aeroflow Health and Mission Health was particularly noteworthy. These two groups had representatives at almost every shift, consistently bringing positive energy and a can-do attitude to the task at hand. Their diligence and enthusiasm were truly inspiring.
Another heartwarming aspect of the event was seeing volunteers bring their family members, especially young children. It was adorable to watch parents and kids working together to pack bags, instilling the value of community service in the next generation.
The final shift deserves special recognition as well. A group of young professionals from Propell Asheville and the Highlands Circle Affinity group stepped up to help with the crucial, if less glamorous, tasks of cleaning and organizing. Their efforts ensured a smooth wrap-up to the event and brought much-needed relief to the UWABC staff.
We extend our deepest gratitude to this year's sponsors:
Arby's sponsored the volunteer lounge, which became a popular spot for volunteers to relax, enjoy refreshments, and savor the catered lunch. Aeroflow Health, our overall sponsor, not only provided enthusiastic volunteers but also crucial financial support to make this drive possible.
The 2024 School Supply Drive and Pack and Sort event exemplifies the best of our community. It brings together people from all walks of life, united in the goal of supporting local students. As we reflect on another successful year, we're reminded of the incredible impact we can make when we work together. Here's to continuing this tradition of generosity and community spirit in the years to come!
