On May 29, the Board of Directors of United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County unanimously approved the annual organizational budget and competitve grant funding recommendations. These grant recommendations were made by the Competitive Grants Review Teams and the Community Investment Committee. The knowledgeable community volunteers that were a part of these two committees made investment decisions based on the following criteria:
- quality of the applications
- alignment of the organizations’ results with the desired community-level results, and
- amount of funds available
United Way will invest $3,314,345 in our community during the 2019-20 fiscal year. This includes support for the implementation of all four of our strategies: NC 2-1-1 Asheville Call Center, our community volunteer center - Hands On Asheville-Buncombe, Community Schools, and Community Investments (grants and contracts with external nonprofits).
Within Community Investments alone, United Way will direct more than $1.1 million to local nonprofits through the competitive grants process, and continue its commitment to the community school strategy, including investing more than $303,000 in external programs providing district-wide support for students, their families and communities via hubs of service contracts. Also included in this funding decision, $1,000 was awarded to each of 28 grant recipients that want to further their diversity, equity and inclusion work.
