Rachel Miller

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I majored in business management, leadership training with a minor in teaching ESL. For a few years following, I lived around the world working with global non profits, mainly in Eastern Europe, such as Bosnia, Croatia and Turkey. Moved back to the states where I worked within the business management for over a decade. Have owned and started multiple companies along the way, and yet have continually found myself drawn back to working among children. I most recently worked at Hall Fletcher Elementary with Asheville City Schools prior to accepting the position with United Way. My husband and I also own an indoor axe throwing venue insides of the Asheville mall, fulfilling our dream to create an inclusive community hangout space that is open to all. After living in West AVL for a few years, you can now find me tucked among the mountains in Candler, NC with my funky 70's A-Frame, with my husband, 2 children and our plethora of animals.

Give us a glimpse into your role at United Way. How do you help us fulfill our mission? What are you most excited about accomplishing as a team?

My role as a Community Coordinator with Hall Fletcher is to help create a more dynamic, equitable and thriving community, by providing additional resources that assist in connecting the needs of our students and families. This is done by addressing barriers to necessary services and support, promoting active family and community engagement and enabling more efficient and effective use of key resources.

What’s your favorite thing about our community?

My favorite part of the Asheville community is the iridescent breadth of people. The unique blend of varying cultures, beliefs and perspectives all mix together to create our beautiful diverse city overflowing with music, arts and food.

What would we find you doing when you aren’t at work?

I can be found loving on my sweet family, working our little homestead, curled up with a book and cup of coffee. I am also a competitive axe thrower and love to travel globally to compete in various tournaments.
