United Way Worldwide CEO is one of USA TODAY's Women of the Year

Every United Way is an independent nonprofit organization fully operated by its local community. We also work together as a network with support and guidance from United Way Worldwide. As a network, we all believe in standing up for our neighbors—a value Angela F. Williams, President & CEO of United Way Worldwide, exemplifies every day. Her recent recognition as one of USA Today’s Women of the Year is a testament to this belief, her leadership, and her relentless drive to mobilize the power of communities.

That commitment was clear when Williams visited Western North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Helene, witnessing firsthand the relief efforts led by United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County (UWABC). Meeting with UWABC CEO Dan Leroy, Owen Middle Coordinator Josh Owen and several other staff. She saw how our network, community schools, partners, and volunteers stepped up for families and areas in crisis.

“We as human beings have an obligation to stand up and fight for our neighbors,” Williams said—a belief that fuels both her leadership and UWABC’s mission. Her visit reinforced what we know to be true: when we come together, real change happens.

For Williams, this work is personal. She reflected on the power of individual action, saying:

"That was my moment to say, what can I do to change the lives of young people that don't stand a chance if I don't intervene?"

She saw in WNC what she has always believed: change doesn’t take thousands—it takes people willing to act. United Way is about action and caring for our communities. Williams said, "Mobilizing the caring power of people and serving communities – is an awesome responsibility."

Williams' recognition is more than another celebration of her leadership; it's a reminder of why we do what we do. It is a reminder that every action counts and when individuals rise together we can build a powerful and resilient community where all can thrive.
