"It Could Change the Life of a Child": The Power of Mentorship and Robotics

The night before Hurricane Helene, rain poured down, but that didn’t stop a group of young Eaton volunteers from fulfilling their commitment to show robotics building a group of middle schoolers from Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS). As part of a special evening event, these volunteers transformed an empty conference room into a robotics hub, setting up stations where students enrolled in BBBS and their mentors could dive into the basics of engineering.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is dedicated to igniting the potential in young people by providing them with caring, committed mentors who are community volunteers. Their mission aligns seamlessly with United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County (UWABC), which works to unite people and resources to support youth success.

At the robotics event, Eaton employees guided students through the fundamentals of making an engine run. Both students and mentors were equally excited, working through challenges and celebrating small victories along the way. The energy in the room was electric, with bursts of laughter and determination filling the space. With pizza and snacks fueling their creativity, students built, tested, and tweaked their rolling robots, racing them across the conference room floor and even brainstorming ways to make them faster.

“They were okay to make mistakes and learn from it too,” shared one Eaton volunteer. “When you work with older people, making one mistake can feel like the end of the world—but it’s really not. So it’s a good way to learn from mistakes and explore with the kids too.”

The impact of the evening extended beyond just the students. The Eaton employees who stayed late into the evening are part of a leadership development program, having recently graduated from college. Volunteering isn’t just an act of service for them—it’s a way to grow, build camaraderie, and even support their mental well-being. It’s also just another example of how Eaton stays committed to youth opportunities from cradle to career.

“When they show their energy, it gives me more energy,” said Andrew, one of the volunteers. “We don’t interact with a lot of middle school kids on a daily basis, so it wakes you up a little after a long day of working. It feels good.”

This partnership between Eaton and BBBS exemplifies UWABC’s mission to build a more united community. Across Buncombe County, UWABC brings together businesses, nonprofits, and volunteers to drive impact and create opportunities for young people. Through our Days of Connection, we actively bridge the gap between corporations and nonprofit partners, working together toward the Bold Community Goal: ensuring that all students graduate ready for college, career, and community.

BBBS, a committed United for Youth partner, plays a critical role in expanding youth opportunities. By fostering relationships that expose students to new skills and career paths, these partnerships lay the foundation for lifelong learning and success.

“More creativity and more excitement,” said Arjun, summing up the energy of the evening.

Camilla, another Eaton volunteer, emphasized the power of hands-on learning: “It’s a very encouraging setting for growing minds. When you say, ‘Okay, build a robot,’ without providing tools or guidance, it can be discouraging. But if you start with a basis of how things work, a kit, and a fun introduction to an otherwise pretty complex task, it’s very encouraging and a great activity for growing minds.”

She added, “Something like this could change the life of a child, and you don’t even know it yet. It could mean the difference between someone choosing a career in the STEM field or something they aren’t passionate about.”

As for the students, their enthusiasm said it all. “It was medium-hard, but it was fun,” said Marley, a BBBS participant.

This evening of robotics, mentorship, and collaboration is just one example of how partnerships—no matter how unexpected—can create lasting change. Through volunteerism, businesses like Eaton and organizations like BBBS prove that investing in young people is a shared responsibility, and when we come together, we can build a brighter future for all.
